Green.eBay.com aims to be a first-of-its-kind site that combines community-generated content, green products and projects, and related news—all designed to help people live a greener lifestyle on a leaner budget. The new green.eBay.com is a one-stop source for some of the most environmentally-friendly products from around the eBay marketplace and a platform for eBay's 300,000 Green Team members to share stories and ideas for living smarter and greener.

Shop Local Artists
The best holiday inspiration (and shopping) is straight from local artists. Topping our list this year is The Bold Italic's Holiday Indie Mart Dec. 16 and the Renegade Holiday Craft Fair Dec. 17-18. (Office's art prints are also available for sale.)

Make Your Own Gifts
We love the idea of DIY, but have been slacking, frankly. An event forces the issue, in a good way. The Anthem holiday screen printing party sounds kinda fun. And a couple of us are dying to take the Studio Choo holiday centerpiece class. And -- get this -- Pie in a Jar!

Union Square
Don't avoid it; embrace it. Pick an evening when you don't have to actually buy anything. Bring someone you like to stroll with. People watch, window shop, check out the big sparkly tree. Duck into The Gold Dust Lounge, our favorite mid-shopping dive, for a hot drink. They have a real bartender; no mixologists. And don't miss the puppies in the Macy's windows.

Escape for 1h 23min
A film every designer should see. Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first documentary about the legendary Charles and Ray Eames, who strived to create "the best for the most for the least" when revolutionizing mid-century design. It's playing at our favorite little neighborhood theatre, The Vogue, on Sacramento Street. And the DVD is just now available for sale, if you want to gift it.
Lucky SF, Picasso seems to be everywhere these days. And by everywhere, we mean the de Young and SFMOMA. We were blown away by both exhibits.

The de Young shows 100 masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso in Paris (through Oct. 9) -- a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit only possible because the Paris museum is closed for renovations until next year. Blue Period. Rose Period. Cubism. Surrealism. Rattle off what you remember from your art history class over a carafe of sangria in the de Young Cafe. (It's really good sangria.)

At SFMOMA (through Sept. 6) "The Steins Collect" features Picasso works, along with other Parisian avant-garde. We're inspired by the story of the young Steins (from Oakland), who lived in bohemian Paris and supported Picasso, Matisse, and other modern artists, fueling an artistic revolution.
Dog Eared Obits
Shout-out to SF's independent bookstores, including our neighborhood favorite, Dog Eared Books. We especially love the illustrated obituaries posted in the shop's front window. Local artist Veronica De Jesus creates "memorial drawings" of people who have recently passed away, from her own friends, to pop icons -- capturing each person's uniqueness in an eclectic style.
Contemporary Jewish Museum
Part of what makes San Francisco architecture interesting is how it respects history and preserves the past, and also isn't afraid to create something completely new. The Contemporary Jewish Museum in the historic 1907 power substation nails that juxtaposition. The red brick facade is early 20th century architecture, (shockingly) integrated with a giant dark blue steel cube for a distinctly modern feel. There's nothing more inspiring than the courage required to pull off boldly contrasting styles.

SF Botanical Garden
The SF Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park is one of our favorite spots to chill. But the best part might be its bossy entrance sign, with pictograms for absolutely no running, biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, scootering, no dogs, soccer playing, touching plants, stepping on plants, getting high fives from squirrels, etc. Makes us smile every time.
From New Bohemia's website: "This is what we do here...the process involves wielding a brush in hand, and dipping it in paint. It doesn't get much more complicated than that. Or simpler. But it's a craft as old as commerce, and an art indelibly linked to human scale and mass appeal." We couldn't have said it better. You can spot their work all over the city -- Pizzeria Delfina, Balboa Cafe, Crissy Field, BellJar, March, Anchor & Hope, Miette, and many more.

Pavement to Parks
One quarter of the San Francisco's land area is taken up by roadways, and many of them are overly wide with big areas of wasted space. The city's "Pavement to Parks" program is taking over these areas and turning them into beautiful, useable public parklets with landscaping and seating. We love design for good.

826 Valencia
Our favorite pirate supply store in San Francisco. We're long-time fans of 826 Valencia -- a nonprofit that helps kids with writing skills (and a pirate storefront that inspires crazy-creative thinking).
The Fillmore Posters
The city's legendary music venue was made famous by Bill Graham in the mid-60s, when it also became known for its iconic concert posters. For an inspiring lesson in rock history, check out the chronological collection -- including designs by hundreds of amazing artists -- on the mezzanine level of the venue. More are on display in the upstairs bar. Today the tradition continues, and for select sold-out shows, limited edition prints of the night's poster are given to the 1,199 fans as they leave the auditorium. The Hayes Valley Proxy Project
A smart idea in urban planning design in Hayes Valley (one of our favorite hang out 'hoods). Due to the economic downturn, fenced-in empty lots were going to be left undeveloped for several years. So Envelope A+D envisioned Proxy, including shipping containers repurposed for pop-up retail spaces, Slow Food vendors, and a gathering space -- giving the site a whole new (temporary) life. When the economy improves, the structures are easily dismantled for new plans. But in the meantime, we're bee-lining to Proxy's first inhabitant, Smitten, for made-to-order ice cream. It's amazing.

de Young Museum
We love the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. It's the world's biggest copper-clad building, and each of the 7,200 copper panels is uniquely perforated and punched into textured patterns that are based on digital photos of the park's tree canopy. So the facade suggests light filtering through native trees. (This blows our mind a bit.) Check out the 144-foot observation tower on a non-foggy day for the best views of the city.

Muni Identity
Our favorite SF identity is for Muni, the public transit system. Some call it a worm. We see railway tracks. In any case, it's pretty perfect. (And check out the neck tattoos via @munidiaries.)

We especially love that the identity hasn't changed in 30+ years. Close call: In 1997, Muni wanted to replace it with a new logo designed by a student as part of a competition at the Academy of Art. Fortunately, the Public Transportation Commission didn't approve it. Oh, and if it had been, the student would have been paid $5,000. What?
49-Mile Scenic Drive Signs
The 49 Mile Scenic Drive was started in 1938 to promote SF as a destination for tourists and businesses. The route begins and ends at City Hall, marking landmarks along the way, like Mission Dolores, the Ferry Building and the Palace of Fine Arts. We've never actually done the drive (which we hear takes 4 hours without stops), but we do love the iconic seagull signs. Chinatown
SF has the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. Yep. Its 24-square blocks is full of fun surprises. The touristy parts are good, and the non-touristy parts are even better.
As part of its vision to help build a Smarter Planet, IBM highlights examples of the power of cloud:

"The city of Wuxi in southeastern China developed a 'cloud services factory' to provide computing resources to local companies. Software developers can access new resources in minutes, and new businesses can hit the ground running. Wuxi now has the potential to provide services to hundreds of small and medium-sized companies, which represent the future of a city that sees itself as an engine for growth."

"Thanks to a private education cloud, the 12-year-old computers of the Pike County Schools System in eastern Kentucky now behave more like 2009 models. That has enabled the county to cut 62% of its schools' end-user support costs, while providing equal access to education content across 27 schools. Most importantly, Pike's 10,000 students can now access new courseware instantly—something that used to take more than a year."

"Following Hurricane Ike in 2008, Houston was plagued by downed trees and power lines—but the nonprofit human services agency Neighborhood Centers Inc., with its system data backed up in a cloud, didn't suffer a single business disruption at any of its 20 facilities. Following the storm, the agency was back in business, providing support to families in need."

Office created an icon to visualize smarter cloud computing, which appears in IBM's print advertising and on its Smarter Planet website.
